India has lost over 1 TRILLION Rupees !!!(Rs. 1,000,000,000,000) in terms of line losses (energy / fossil fuels!!) in its electrical distribution system over the past 14 years, and is continuing to lose at the rate of 1 CRORE Rupees every HOUR, due to delay in implementation of our fair and green Apparent Energy tariff proposal. CAER's Win-Win proposal, originally conceived by Late Shri. N. G. Kamat, in 1995, does not require funds, infrastructure.
- Baroda Electric Meters (BEM) Ltd., is a Public Limited Company incorporated on 23rd day of March , 1961, at Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, vide Certificate No. 1043 of 1960-61, by the Registrar of Companies, Gujarat. It has a share capital of Rs. 76 lacs (approx. (USD 200,000).
- BEM was set up to manufacture Ferraris (electro-mechanical) Energy Meter, and with a strength of approx. 400 employees it served this objective. Its range included single phase, three phase whole current and CT operated Ferraris meters.BEM was set up with a total capacity of 2,00,000 single phase meters per annum. BEM also diversified into various other electrical and electronic goods such as Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCB), Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), Watt Meters, Ammeters, Distribution Boards, and Transistorized Wall Clocks.
- In the year 2001, the company restructured its operations after the manufacturing operations of the electro-mechanical meters proved to be non profitable. The company had a strong R&D wing called Centre for Apparent Energy Research (CAER) that has focused on design and development of various embedded products including Static Energy Meters, Apparent Energy Meters, and other meters aimed at reducing the distribution losses of the power utilities.
- Due to numerous manufacturing related problems in the energy metering sector in India, currently, BEM has decided to concentrate and focus on its R&D activities alone and abandon further production of meters. Today, it is operating its R&D centre (CAER) that has a strength of 10 R&D engineers. The day to day operations of BEM are being looked after by Dr. Vithal N. Kamat, Managing Director.
- To strengthen the development activities of BEM, it has joined forces with another R&D organization, Centre for Embedded Software Engineering Solutions (CES), a design house of NXP Semiconductors that has been in the business of developing design solutions in automotive, consumer, industrial and other sectors using NXP micro-controllers.
On August 27, 2010, at a function hosted by the students of ICCT Engg. College, the 1st Electricity Bill based on kVAh was delivered by an electric utility (MGVCL) to a consumer (Anand Municipality) in the presence of GERC officials. Click here to compare with kWh Bill.A recently developed Apparent Energy Meter based on an MSP430FE425 microcontroller from Texas Instruments Inc. was also unveiled at the function. The objective was to shatter the old mindset of the electric utilities and outdated perception that Apparent Energy is difficult to compute, needs to be computed indirectly from other energy parameters, or that the meters are more expensive than the kWh meter. By just porting a different software on an Active Energy (kWh) meter hardware, the same was simply transformed into an Apparent Energy Meter.
